I noticed that your George Calvin Phipps was born in West Virginia about 1851. I have info on another George Calvin Phipps who was not the same one, but I have to wonder whether they were likely related because of the same name (George Calvin Phipps) and the recurrence of the name Jess (plus location of West Virginia). Maybe you already have this. Your George Calvin Phipps was born about 1851, and this one was born in 1889:

George Calvin Phipps died Feb. 4, 1964 Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia of acute cardiac accident, age 74 (so born around 1890), farmer, divorced (according to Register of Deaths, Raleigh Co., WV, 1964, online scan via Family Search)

George Calvin Phipps born June 2, 1889 West Virginia, died Feb. 4, 1964 Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, acute cardiac accident, died in the Raleigh County Court House, buried Feb. 8, 1964 Phipps Cemetery, Sand Lick, Raleigh County, West Virginia. His usual residence was on a farm at Rt. 3, Sand Lick. His father: Jess Phipps. His mother (maiden name): Sarah Milam. He was never in the armed forces. The informant was Lacy E. Phipps who was living in Dayton, Ohio. (according to death certificate scan online via Family Search)
