This is interesting.I'm not sure who this Matthew is, but he would most likely be part of the same family as Abraham Phenix, my ancestor.
I have no documents proving Abraham Phenix's parents and birth information--only a "Preponderance of evidence."My Abraham was married to Mary Montross whose family was in Ulster/Delaware County, New York (county lines changed)at the time he would have been married. He named 2 of his first children James and Catherine, I am assuming for his supposed parents James Francis Phenix and Catherina Bosch, who were in Ulster/Delaware County, NY.James had an extra son in census who is never identified.I believe it is my Abraham.I have found James identified as the son of Matthew Phenix and Mary Jons. That is the reason for my question about Matthew.Abraham would have been born in about 1750 and Matthew maybe 1720's, Abraham about 1788.
My Abraham moved to Luzerne County, PA with the Montross family not long after his marriage.Abraham had 3 brothers and 4 half brothers named Phenix. This Matthew born about 1766 is most likely a nephew or a cousin's son.It seems unlikely that someone named Phenix/Phoenix would be in the same place in those early days as known Phenix, at the same time, and not be closely related.I have not yet found how many people migrated from Ulster/Delaware County, NY to Ulster County, PA at the same time. The Montross family was large, so a lot just with them.
I would be interested to know if you find the connection.I'm fairly sure there is a family connection here. The other sons of James Phenix and Catherina Bosch were Jacobus, Peter, & John Tremper. The sons of James Phenix and Rachel Eisenbrandt are William, Matthew, Daniel, & James--all born before 1780.This half brother Matthew is listed as born 5 March 1775.Sons of Matthew Phenix and Mary Jons are James, William, Robert, Abraham, & Stephen--born between 1749 and 1767.
I wish I could help you more, but this is all I have on the Phenix family.I don't have children listed for Abraham's brothers or cousins. They did live in a Dutch community, so I am assuming they were Dutch. The children's baptisms were recorded in Dutch Reformed Church. You might check there for this Matthew--Dutch Reformed Churches of the south part of New York.
