Hey, I'm just as happy descending from a Tory as from a Whig. The winners of wars write the history, but I think that a reasonable thoughtful person can see that there were two sides to the question back in those times, and that there were reasonable thoughtful people on both sides of the issue.I for one do not believe that all Tories were Devils and all rebels were saints. But I do recognize that, in the period following the Revolution, Tories were widely vilified. That would be a part of the family history that would not be talked about a lot and might even be covered up if that were possible.
Hey, a lot of that emotional attitude continues to this day - you yourself seemed to get a bit "miffed" (as you put it) at the suggestion.Sorry, that was not my intent.I would rather have the true story than merely a pleasant one.I suspect that several of my ancestors headed west from the Carolinas after the Revolution because they had been Tories or had Tory links and were living under something of a cloud back home.Whatever the specific details, the Miller family (descendants of Jane Pickens) that moved to Mississippi seem to fit that general description.
Thanks for the thoughtful response.I will follow up on your leads when I have time. And I won't think any the less of my ancestors even if they were Tories.
Joe
