To help with sourcing information, you might consider the following,
which I neither challenge nor defend, only cite for your use.
Bob Wolfe (a Pickett descendant) referenced Micajah's bible for the birth date of 25 Dec. 1748.
- obtained from Bob Wolfe personal site:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gene/Web2Ged/GoodWolfe/pn/p331.htmhttp://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gene/Web2Ged/GoodWolfe/pn/p331.htm
accessed: 2009/04/29 no longer available
Currently, see: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gen/person/p331.htmhttp://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gen/person/p331.htm
which lists:
Micajah Pickett
Birth: 25 December 1748, Anson County, North Carolina
Death: 23 December 1822, Rutherford County, North Carolina
Father: Micajah Pickett
Mother: Winnifred Beasley
Partner: Kisanna Hinson
Marriage: 20 December 1768, Craven District, South Carolina
You might try contacting Bob Wolfe directly for his sources.

[ Lot of Decembers here ! ]
Pickett Fence, a newsletter authored by Dixie Johnson, Vol IV No 4,
OCT / NOV / DEC 1990, page 323-327, published the Lineage Chart of
Paul H Shipley (born 16 Dec 1919) married to Virginia Harbuck (born 19 Dec 1926)
(in 1990, adddress published as 9895 Brumbelow Rd; Alpharetta, GA 30202,
incase you want to attempt to locate his family for possible source material)
which contained your questioned individuals among his lineage:
[individuals are numbered]
80: Micajah Pickett Sr
Born: 25 Dec 1748 Place: Anson Co, NC (?)
Died: 23 Dec 1822 Place: Greenville Co, SC
{- Though written in Buncombe Co, note that Greenville was the county
where his will was filed and probated; check the reference which you cited}
Marr: 24 Dec 1768 Place: South Carolina
81: Kisanah Henson(Hinson)
Born: 25 Dec 1752 Place __
Died: 25 Aug 1843
daughter of:
162: Philip Henson(Hinson)
Born: ___Place __
Died: 20 Dec 1784 (LWT) Place South Carolina
[note: I have reviewed this chart and it appears to attempt
factual listings, showing both approximate and exact dates
of course, appearance does not validate individual dates,
neither does a sincere belief in an erroneous date.]

As to 'Old Cravens', Casual usage of locations is often imprecise.
From an unsourced, anonymous (yes, I know it's not reliable but
demonstrates imprecision) biography of Micajah:
"It is clear that by 1768, however, he was living in that part of
Craven Co or Judicial District, which in 1785 was established
as Fairfield county (or District), SC."
Possible that 'Old Cravens' is meant to imply the above description.
I believe, as used, that a judicial district was synonymous with
a voting district and court system.

You are correct that records were kept by family members and subject
to all of the frailties of individuals. For example, Kissanah Henson's
younger brother, Charles (b 1763) served in the American Revolution and
lived in Anson Co NC, gave testimony for Am Rev War Pension in April 1833,
stating "record of my birth kept by my grandfather Philip Henson" and
"transcribed by me and in the possession of my brother Bartlett of this county" (Anson NC).
The Bartlet Henson who was son of Philip died in Fairfield Co SC in 1803,
and this Charles gives his own d/o/b as 21 June 1763 and names Philip
as his grandfather, rather than his father.
