dear lisa, you have ran into old english spelling for picking i have found the earlist pickings to the new world were john and robert picking who were west of the alleganies in kentucky territory in 1732.robert picking had a son john picking who later settled in maryland and penn.some of my family moved south and picking became pickens orpickins. you are right about the indian connection.I am over half southern Cherokee and am doing research in that area now. as for the pike connection are name is connected back in the 11th century when a christian crusader ,who was a general defeated the infadels and captured Jeruslem, therefore our oldest coat of arms is the same as the Pike's family later our family name changed to Pic and pycn then pickin and picking.
