The box for how long Thomas Pickle has been married contains the two numbers "25" and "50", which I presumed is intended to demonstrate his years married to current wife, and his years married total. You can see on the next line where Jennie says she has been married 25 years, and has given birth to 12 children, 11 of which were still living on the census day. Clearly the two oldest children are the product of a previous marriage. This leaves 9 children showing for Jennie. One of them is already dead by 1900, leaving two children by Tom and Jennie unaccounted.

You can find Thomas Pickle in the Ancestral File, AFN: HZ0N-1F, with his first wife Lucinda Stephenson AFN: HZ0N-2L, and their children.

You will note some (very slight) inconsistency between the current data and that given in the Ancestral File, and elsewhere. However, here is the reconstruction of the entire family, with birth and death dates taken from their tombstone inscriptions, where known to me.

Thomas Pickle, b. 05 FEB 1821 in Bedford Co., TN
d. 22 FEB 1901 in Bedford Co., TN
m1. Lucinda B. Stephenson (b. 09 APR 1824 in Bedford Co., TN, d. 05 JAN 1875 in Sinking Creek, Bedford, TN) some time in the 1840s in Bedford Co., TN. They had the following children:
Martha Jane Pickle b: 06 JUL 1850 in Bedford Co., TN, d. 15 AUG 1925, Shelbyville, Bedford, TN (Martha is my line)
Daniel Pickle b: 1852 in Bedford Co., TN
James R. Pickle b: 07 MAR 1854 in Bedford Co., TN, d. 22 DEC 1856
William H. Pickle b: 16 MAY 1856 in Bedford Co., TN, d. 06 SEP 1856
Edward Cooper Pickle b: 1859 in Bedford Co., TN
Thomas Newton Pickle b: May 1863 in Bedford Co.,TN
Benjamin Franklin Pickle b: Aug 1866 in Bedford Co., TN

After Lucinda B. Stephenson's death, 05 JAN 1875, Thomas remarried within about 6 months to Jennie (maiden name unknown), b. OCT 1856. They had the following children:
George Pickle, b. MAR 1876
Minnie Pickle, b. APR 1879
Robert C. Pickle, b. FEB 1881
Davidson Pickle, b. FEB 1885
Sam Jones Pickle, b. SEP 1888
Joe W. Pickle, b. NOV 1890
Clara D. Pickle, b. APR 1893
Susie A. Pickle, b. OCT 1895
Lucy E. Pickle, b. Jan 1898
unknown1 Pickle, d. BEF. 1900
unknown2 Pickle
unknown3 Pickle

And however many kids might have been born after 1900, chich probably wasn't too many, since Jennie would have been 43+ and Thomas would have been 80+. So Thomas Pickle had 19 kids total, including one when he was 78. Strong work grandpa Pickle!

I can not quite tell from the Census, he might have been Thomas B. Pickle, but I can't tell if it is a "B." from the enumerator, or an over-written "13" from the tabulator.

Thomas Pickle's will abstract only mentions a few people. He mentions his previous wife (Lucinda), his two deceased children (James R. and William H.), and his son Daniel (which makes sense, since he would have been the eldest son). Interstingly, he does not mention the child of Jennie which is dead by 1900. This leaves open the possibility that this child AND/OR either or both of the unaccounted for children are Jennie's by a previous marriage. This seems a little unlikely to me because she would have been about 18 when she married Thomas, and because there are sufficient gaps in the Jennie's childrens' birth dates to fit in three more kids.

If anyone has any information about any of these people, their ancestors, or descendants, then please post here, AND/OR e-mail me. I am interested in knowing Jennie's maiden name in particular. Cheers, -gb-
