GUSTAVUS SMITH born May 9, 1849 died May 19, 1926.
Gustavus/Gustave/Gus M. Smith, the son of Timothy Smith and Harriett Abigail Greene, was born in the state of New York, May 9th 1849 and departed this life at his home in Ferry, Michigan, May 19, 1926 at the age of 77 years and 10 days.
He came with his parents to Cass County, Michigan in 1860 and from Cass County to his present home in 1864 where he has since resided.
He was married to Elizabeth Pickel July 4, 1871 by the Rev. Darling. This Union proved a happy one, Mrs. Smith being a loving and faithful companion. To this Union was born one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Hedges, with whom he has resided since the death of his wife which occured January 17, 1906.
Mr. Smith was a man of sterling quality, respected by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed. He has served his township as supervisor, clerk, treasurer and other offices during the many years of his residence here, always, to the satisfaction of his constituency.
He leaves to mourn their loss, one daughter Mrs. Minnie Hedges of Ferry and an adopted son Niel VerHuls, of Muskegon, one sister Mrs. Helen Smith of Ferry, several nieces and nephews and many friends and neighbors. Burried in the Ferry Cemetery.

John and Nellie Baxter, married in 1905, was one of the families to settle in Oceana County south of Ferry on the south branch of the White River. John’s father was GEORGE T. BAXTER, a Baptist preacher from the state of New York, who rode the countryside on a black horse. He preached in various places as well as having a congregation at the Williamson School, near the river. John’s mother was MARY JANE MORGAN who died at forty-two years of age during childbirth.
NELLIE’s parents were THOMAS and NAOMI (THOMPSON) PICKEL of Ontario, Canada. Thomas was one of eight children born to JACOB and JUDITH PICKEL of Canada. Thomas Pickel married Naomi in 1880 living in a logging camp northeast of Ferry, where he worked as a log roller on the river and Naomi was a cook for the camp. In early 1900’s they moved west, purchasing land noirth of Ferry on 148th Ave., north of the Lickskillet School. They built the house and barn, farming and making maple syrup. The place is now owned by Zelda Pierson.
John and Nellie cut cord wood, farmed their land as well as picking fruit and doing outside farm labor. They raised twelve children who worked alongside them, as did so many then.
