Who was Carlo Piepho?
Posted by: David W Piepho Date: October 09, 1999 at 15:00:10
  of 41

Carlo Piepho was born (most likely) in Germany about 1822. After coming to America he settled in Cincinnati, OH.
On 13 Jun 1861 he enlisted, as a Sargeant, in the Ohio infantry. On 30 Jul 1862 he re-enlisted as a Captain in the 108th Regiment Volunteer Ohio Infantry.
By November 1863 he was a lieutenant colonel and participated in the Battle of Chattanooga, November 23 through 25, 1863. His chain of command during that battle was:

Union Army Major General Ulysses S. Grant
Army of the Cumberland Major General George H. Thomas
Fourteenth Corps Major General J.M. Palmer
Second Division Brig. General J.C. Davis
Second Brigade Brig. General John Beatty
108th Ohio Lieut. Colonel Carlo Piepho

He survived the battle but after that I have no data for him. He does not appear on any US Census. It is rumored that he had a noble lineage in Germany and was the source of the Piepho family crest.
