From a quick time analysis of genealogy data on the LDS web site, it looks like Pierpoints (Pierreponts) started in Nottinghamshire and expanded somewhat to the east, but even more to the west to Cheshire and Lancashire, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. Perhaps this was because of a shift in their businesses from agriculture to manufacturing and trade.

Pierpoints (Spearpoints) are centered about London, mostly in Kent and to a lesser extent in Surrey and Hertfordshire. Pierpoints eventually disappeared from Hertfordshire. 1881 British Census doesn't list any Spearpoints or Pierpoints in the Herts.
