Calvin,

I suppose it's possible that Dr. Langley was named for an family friend, but since the Langleys and Pier(re)ponts (and Stows) all lived in Roxbury, MA, there might well be a kinship connection.

I tried the Smithsonian but got no help. You might try again.

My late father was an aeronautical engineer at the NASA Langley Research Center at Langley AFB, Hampton, VA. I've already discovered that he was kin to the Wright Bros. and Sir Geoffrey De Havilland, the British aviation pioneer; I'd like to know if he was kin also to S.P. Langley.
