This is in response to the Morgan Family News letter of Dec, 2010. It states that the Pierpoint/ponts of the Monongalia now WV are of the Massachusetts branch of this family. That information comes from statements and assumptions made by Francis H. Pierpont/Pierpoint [who in fact made the spelling change to this name in WV]. Union War Governor of VA & father of WV. There is no research to back up this claim. But there is research to back up the claim that the Pierpoint/ponts of the Monongalia now WV are of the Maryland branch of the Pierpoints. The name Pierpoint being the original spelling of the name. [ref The Norman People; by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore, pg 362] It states, Pierpoint, a Norman baronial family. See Dugdale, and Banks, Dorm. and Ext Bar. Under Pierpont it say see Pierpoint.
They ref: "Ambler's History of monongalia County" This ref by Charles Henry Ambler, I have been unable to locate, even though there are many other books by Ambler on WV. It is not listed on World Catalogue. So where it can be reviewed, maybe only in WV. I have reviewed the following books and online websites to see what data is available and where it might be located.

IT IS MY POSITION THAT THE PIERPOINT/PONTS OF WV are of the Maryland line; and the name Larkin came down because Henry Pierpoint/Peirpoint/Peyrpoint, married Mehitable Larkin Holland. Widow of Otho Holland and dau of Jonathan & Elizabeth Issacs Larkin.! There are many other court recds published in Maryland books that bear this out. But the definative are REF: listed below.

I started with under search terms Morgan and Paxton & Pierpont/Pierpoint. There is alot of data there under these two surnames.

1. History of the Early Settlement and Indian Wars of Western Virginia; by Wills DE Hass
2. History of West Virginia; Old and New in one vollume; by James Morton Callahan
3. History of Monongalia County, West Virginia; by Wiley, Samuel T. this canbe found on line at The Darlington Digital Library
4. History of the great Kanawha Valley; by Hale, John P.
5. Trans-Allegheny pioneers: historical sketches of the first white settlements west of the Alleghenies, 1748 and after; by Hale, John P.
6. West Virginia the mountain state; by Ambler, Charles H. and Summers, Festus P.
7. A History of West Virginia; by Ambler, Charles Henry, Ph.D.
8. Francis H. Pierpont; Union War Governer of Virginia and Father of West Virginia; by Ambler, Charles H.
9.There were many other books of the same vintages; most of these books were published 50 to 100yrs ago. That I was unable to view, as they were Ref/genealogy books and therefor, not loanable via [Interlibrary Loan] and not available locally for me to search. So most of the "facts" stated in the older books predate the internet and interlibrary loan. Unless you had alot of money to visit PRIMARY SOURCES;-)

10. We now have FRENCH MORGANS; The History and genealogy of the family of Col. Morgan Morgan, the first white settler of the State of West Virginia. I have maybe 50 pgs of this book; which covers my direct line to Zackquill Morgan, son of Morgan ap Morgan. It doesnot go into much regarding the origin of the Pierpoints/ponts.

11. Then we have another well known book & author; Hedman, Kathryn Pierpoint and her [The Pierpoint-Pierpont family of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia. dtd 1953.]
10/11. canbe rented on film/microfilm from the Mormon Library. #1429817 item 4 and #1502572, item 8. This would not be French Morgans complete book. Just excerpts.

12* Prince George's County Maryland; Indexes of Church Registers 1686-1885, Vol 1; Queen Anne Parish ;pg 188, pg 193, 194 "PEIRPOINT, JONATHAN, b. Aug, 3 1732 ; son <sic>Larkin and Sarah (b. p. 26)
Larkin m. Charity Duckett; November 18, 1725 (m. p. 4)
Larkin, b. September 24, 1726 [SON] of Larkin & Charity (m.p. 20)

Larkin m. Sarah Simmons/Symmons; 1730 (m. p. 5) her parents appear to be pg 193; Jonathan & Mary[Elizabeth] SIMMONS/SYMMONS ; 11 Oct, 1999, I noted in looking at the original FILMED[Mormon library #0013206][title Queen Anne Parish, Prince George Co., MD, Episcopal 1705-1773] Vestry Book, what appears to be "quotation marks" under the entry. And the prior entry was by the same clergy Mcgill; so they may have been married 31 Dec, 1730. <this is the Angelican or Episcopal Church> the entrys made by mcgill are very brief and don't contain the data entered by other Clergy.
