Far back as I can see Jean Pierre from Milo, France came here to New Orleans abt 1730. This is in the Ships registry. Since then, a lot of people of color were called Pierre. Just "Pierre". So a lot of people of color just took it for a last name. Pierre was used more often than "Boy", like the movies want you to think.
