I was just sent this info found on the 1870 census, Darke county, Adams twp. pg 58
Jacob Pifer, 37 b: Baden
Catharine, 35 b: PA
John, 12 b: PA
William 8 b: PA
David 3 b: OH,

The 1880 Darke county, Wayne twp. census pg 387D
John Pifer, b: PA parents b: PA, Laborer
listed with
C. McGreevey, 36 b: OH Farmer
Lydia McGreevey, 23 b: OH
Cornelius " 7 b: OH
Wm. H 4 b: OH

This might explain why John did not show up in the Miami county census with his parents and 2 brothers.

If any one thinks this family is familiar to them, please let me know. I'd like to find out about John and David and their parents.
