I am Joseph C. Piland a great-great grandson of Thomas Gypson Piland and according to my records his wife was Kittie Hogan. According to my information (told to me by Joe Piland, a son of Thomas and Kittie) they came to Southern Illinois after being burned out by "that damned Yankee army". When Joe died at the age of 101 he was the oldest living resident of Hardin County,IL.My great grandfather was George Washington Piland; my grandfather was Joseph G. Piland;my father was Claud Joseph Piland.
George Washington Piland and Susanne Carter's children were:
John Thomas
Mary Catherine
Francis Marion
George Jackson
Elijah Gibson
Joseph Gibbons
Tabitha Ellen
William Harrison
Julia Ann
Luria Sylvania
George later married Lydia Kittinger Davis.Their children were:
Sophia Mae
Clifford ???
I would like to know more about the Thomas Piland family. The news account of Joe Piland (Thomas's son) said that he was "born in Kentucky near the source of the Cumberland River".I have his date of birth as January 27, 1856.The news account said that he move here with his parents when he was 5 years old which would mean that they moved to Southern Illinois in 1861.
I, like many others, should have questioned my grandfather regarding the family. One of the stories was that someone, I think it was Thomas's father was killed by a wagon wheel running over him as they were crossing the Appalachain Mountains.I have nothing to verify this. Elijah Piland has descendents living near Piggott Arkansas. They have indicated that they have some letters I would be interested in.I hope to go up there sometime to see what I can find about the family.
George W. Piland is buried in the Cottage Grove cemetery near Equality, Eldorado and Harrisburg IL.I went to the cemetery last summer, but didn't find a stone.Last week I received the address of the lady who keeps the records of that cemetery. When I ask I will inquire whether there are any other Pilands buried there.
