Since my original post I have learned that Samuel's first wife, Mary Hazelwood, died without issue. He married Mary Jane McCanlis in 1860 in Doniphan co KS and the children belong to that marriage. She was listed as "Mrs." on the marriage license but I have not yet discovered her maiden name or her first husband's name. She was born in Kentucky. She died soon after the 1870 census was taken as Samuel married Anna [Brink] Field in 1871. In the 1860 census Samuel and Mary Jane have a three-year-old girl named Mary John living with them. If anyone has information on any of these families (Piles, McCanlis/ McCanless, John), please respond.
