From Pellietier to Pilkey

My husband and children are related to Peter Pilkey b. 6-30-1774 in Ontario, Canada. He married Catherine Barnhardt b. 1784 in Cornwall, Ontario Canada. We have been told that the Pilkey name was formed from Pelletier around 1812 and that they hailed from Trois Riveres, Quebec. Does anyone have any information to verify this story.
