My husband John Pilling is the direct descendant of Thomas Pilling who came to Philadelphia in about 1810ish, reportedly from Bolton England. He married Mary Platt about 1819.She was the daughter of his employer to whom he apprenticed in textile weaving. They had children Annie 1820, George Platt 1821, Martha 1824, James, Harriett, and Mary.George Platt Pilling, my husband's direct ancestor apprenticed to a Philadelphia silversmith named Jacob Stockman, had his own silver shop during the 1840s and 1850s and went on to found a company manufacturing surgical instruments still in existence called George P. Pilling Company.George Platt Pilling married 3 times. He and his second wife, Tamazine Trimble Jenks, m. 1852, had William Stockman Pilling born 1857.William married Catharine Ross in 1885.His son Joseph Ross Pilling born 1886 married Anna Thornton Fries in 1911.Joseph and Anna had children Joseph Ross, Sarah Thornton (died young) Anna Fries, John Fries Pilling (my husband's father), William Stockman, Catharine Ross and Mary Elizabeth. My father in law died several years ago.My husband John Pilling is the oldest son - we have two sons Ian James Pilling and Evan Kerwin Pilling, and we still live just outside of Philadelphia. -
My husbands Uncle by marriage did a huge amount of research that included some on his wife's Pilling family. There was information handed down in the family that Thomas Pilling came from Bolton England in the early 1800s but Uncle Mow couldn't find any information in Bolton church records. That started a family tradition that perhaps Thomas Pilling didn't have a family and assumed the name Pilling from a town called PIlling that he was passing through. It sounds as if there may be a Bolton and a Bolton le Moors in England. If you have any information, I would love to have it so that we can rescue poor Thomas from the mists of obscurity.Family history assumes he was born about 1788 - he died in 1858 at age 70.I look forward to hearing from you.Beth Pilling
