if you have ever seen the Pimentel coat of arms you'll notice that it depicts red & green chile peppers on its shield. One explanation is that at least one early branch of the family were prosperous spice merchants. they may very well have been of Jewish origin, choosing to take their name from their lucrative profession. Large fortunes were made in the international trading of spices.
