Dear George,
Thanks for your info. I took my mother & sister to the Azores to look up our roots 3 years ago. On Terceira I was surprized to learn of a town named Porto Judeo. Later I read that the Portuguese kings were so afraid of their enemies(usually the Spanish,French, & sometimes the British)
invading the lightly-populated Azores that they invited various minorities to help colonize the islands. Moors, Africans, Jews, & the Flemish were given land grants & were even allowed to practice their religions as long as they were discreet & swore loyalty to Portugal. Regards, Joel
