Thomas Pine b. 01/1850 Vermont /Ireland

Thomas Pine was recorded in the 1900 Chicago, Illinois census as being born in Vermont in January 1850. His wife's name is not clear. Looks like Gle--. She was from New York, born in December 1851. They married in 1867. Thomas's parents are listed as born in Ireland. In 1900 Thomas had 8 living children. Those listed were born in Illinois. The names listed in the census are: Hellen 07/1878, Catherine 12/1883, George 01/1884,(my grandfather who married Gertrude Webb), Lillian 12/1888 and Davis 10/1889. My guess is the other 3 are older.
Tried to get Thomas's birth certificate from Vermont Vital Statistics but they said there was no birth registered for Thomas Pine in January 1850. It is possible that he was born in Ireland but came over while an infant or small child and only remembered living in Vermont. Can anyone help me out?
Lynn
