Pine family in New Jersey (during Civil War)

I am looking for information a a gentleman whose last name was Pine. He evidently went to the Civil War in place of another gentleman named Simpkins. I believe his first name was Ben. Ben supposedly raised this Pine gentleman's son, whom I believe was my Great Grandfather William Henry Simpkins, dob 4-29-1860. My William Henry was married to an Ida Clark. They were all from NJ. Anyone have any idea how I can find out if this is true, or does anyone have any info that might help me?
Thanks a lot,
Suzie (Elena Marie Gould)
