David Pinkerton, d. 1771/2, Orange Co., NC

David Pinkterton of St. Matthew's Parish, Orange County, NC, made his will on 7 Feb. 1764, and it was probated in the Jan. 1772 court. In the will, he mentioned his wife Margaret, sons John, William and David, daughters Martha and Mary (not yet of age) and stepdaughter Agnes Trickey.

I find him on a list for Orange Co., NC in 1755. A couple of family trees on Ancestry.Com state that he was born in 1717, a son of James Pinkerton. Several of them give his wife's name as Mary Glass. There's no mention of Margaret.

The reason I am searching for information about this man is that I believe his stepdaughter, Agnes Trickey, may have been my 6th great grandmother, and that his (second?) wife Margaret may have been my 7th great grandmother.

Giles Trickey (1731/2-1802), a son of William Trickey and Angis Pummery (Agnes Pomeroy?) of Broad Clyst or Broadclyst, Devon, England, was in this part of NC in 1777. A section of Orange Co. was taken to form Caswell Co. in 1777, and Giles was listed in a 1777 Caswell tax list. A section of Caswell was taken to form Person Co. in 1792, and Giles made his will in Person in 1795, and it was probated there in 1802.

In his will, Giles did not mention his wife, who had presumably died before he had, but he mentioned four children: William, John, Annis and Elizabeth. Annis Trickey (1767-1844) married Hezekiah DeWeese (1760-1839) in 1784. Elizabeth married Hezekiah's younger brother, Rev. Jonathan DeWeese, Jr. (1767-1849). They were sons of Jonathan DeWeese (d.1777) and Rachel Marchant, who came from Delaware to NC in 1772.

Annis and Hezekaih moved to Mecklenburg Co., NC around 1800, and Elizabeth and Jonathan moved to Greenville, SC at about the same time. I am descended from Annis and Hezekiah's first born child, Jonathan DeWeese (1785-1841). He married Margaret Boyd Irvin (d.1865) in 1810. Their daughter, Mary Amanda DeWeese (1824-1851) married William R. Wilkinson (c.1816-1857/60) in 1841. Their daughter Mary Adeline Wilkinson (1846-1906) married John Andrew Field (1846-1883) in 1865. Their son Ernest Marion Field (1866-1902) married Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947) in 1888. Their son John Levi Field (1899-1963) was my grandfather. I never knew him as he died before I was born.

I'd be most grateful for any information anyone could give me on David Pinkerton, his wife Margaret (her parents and and her first husband) and his stepdaughter, Agnes Trickey.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC
