Alison....your posting is identical to my situation. My wife is a direct descendant of John Randolph Pinkerton, from Antrim County, Ireland. Family lore says he was somehow related to the famous detective. In fact, when his life started falling apart after the Civil War, he apparently traveled from Philadelphia to Chicago, perhaps to ask Allan Pinkerton for some help. From what I have learned about the great detective, he was not at all charitable to his relatives. My wife's ancestor committed suicide in Chicago in Chicago in early Dec 1871 (one month after the big fire). Please contact me at pweitfle at aol dot com. I have a lot of info on the Pinkerton clans from Antrim Co.
