John Pinkerton Mckay Hunter-c.1858 Boston

We have a descendant by the name of JOHN PINKERTON MCKAY (sp?)HUNTER and have no idea from where his TWO MIDDLE names came. We figure that maybe they are maiden names from some women in his ancestry. John's mother was Mary Jane Adams of Massachusetts, so it is not her. I'm unsure of her mother's name.
His father was William G. Hunter of Vermont. William's father was George Hunter of Vermont who married Martha, but I know not her surname. Anyone out there know of this family?
I'm told that the Hunter family comes from Scotland, but I have yet to find that connection.
Thanks!
Kristina
