Pinkhams' Notch is part of Pinkham's Grant in NH. The details i know are pretty cloudy as they were told to me by my grandmother before I was old enough to care. But as I remember The land was granted to one of us under the condition that a road would be built through the mountains past the western base of Mt. Washington. The plan was foiled by a severe winter and I also remember something about braving a great blizzard in the "Notch".
In any case The road did eventually get built and is part of Rt.16 running from north of Conway NH to Mt. Washington. Pinkham's grant is now part of the White Mountain National forest. I wish I could give more info and would be happy to know the full story if anyone else knows anything.
