Hi Eleanor,

I am Steve Pinkham and I descend from Sam and Sarah (Chesley) Pinkham too. I worked with Martin a number of years ago on this line. The stories about Abial, Hannah Daniels, Drews and McGreers comes from a letter that Curtis Pinkham wrote to his sister in California in the late 1880's just before he died (I have a copy of the letter). As an old man, he tried to recall all the stories his father, mother, and Aunt Lois told him as a child. I too had believed in the Abiah story until I finally found proof that Curtis' grandfather (who he never knew) was actually Samuel Sr., not Abial. When I was searching for land records on Richard, Samuel's brother, I found a reference to a book and page at the Rockingham County Deed office. Interestingly, this particular book never got referenced in the index books, so subsequent researchers evidently never found this deed. When I went to that book and page, there was a deed in which Samuel (who got 1/3 of the probabate as the eldest son) sold the home farm to his brother Richard (who had married Susan Daniels). In the deed, Sam says, "and all land in Barrington,Lee and Madbury, that belonged to my father, Samuel Pinkham, deceased..." There's the proof that his father was Samuel, not Abial as Curtis failed to recall in his letter 80 years later.
