The order of the children of Tristram and Martha (Hayes) Pinkham come from the probate records of her father, Samuel Hayes. There is no other listing (i.e. baptisms).
The list is: Samuel, Tristram, Richard, & William, Martha Giles, Leah Nute, Mary Jones, Elizabeth, Grace, and Abigail Pinkham.
The boys are named oldest to youngest first and the girls secondly, again, presumably oldest to youngest. So Martha is very likely the eldest child.
Tristram and Martha's marriage date can be approximated as follows: Martha was born on 16 August 1721. If 18 when she married that would be about 1739.
Child Samuel (the oldest boy) was at least 21 in 1763 so born in 1742 or before. Child Mary was born about December 1744 according to her gravestone at Farmington, NH. See http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nh/strafford/cemeteries/farmington/farm-j-l.txt. Now Martha must be born before 1743 or so since she has a child about 1759.
That said I would state that Tristram and Martha were married about 1739. Children:
Martha b. 1740
Samuel b. 1742
Mary b. 1744
The rest of the children may not be in order:
Tristram b. 1746 (died in 1825 and married a woman born in 1747)
Richard b. 1748 (died in 1815 and married a woman born in 1750)
William b. 1750
Leah b. 1752
Elizabeth b. 1754 (possibly the Betty Pinkham who married Andrew Young at Gilmanton in 1789)
Grace b. 1756
Abigail b. 1758 (married Joseph Runnels in 1780, very likely the youngest)
So how does that timeline work? I realize that puts Leah out of place in the order, but there's no way to squeeze her in before Mary and after Martha (unless Mary and Martha were twins, which is possible, but that's complete supposition).
