More on Jonathan Pinion/Pinnell SC>GA
Parents not proven. What is known is that Jonathan, Lewis and Peter Pinion/Pinnell appear together in Union, Spartanburg and Greenville District South Carolina records.Their relative age indicates that they are probably brothers, cousins or perhaps both. The name Pinion and Pinnell is used interchangeably in legal records in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia perhaps due to some unique pronunciation.Jonathan is listed as age 70-80 on 1830 Hall Co. Georgia census and son Richard in 1880 is listed born South Carolina as is his mother and father.
I believe that Jonathan and Lewis are probably brothers as Lewis had a 100 acre grant of land surveyed in Union District, South Carolina on January 21, 1785 and five days later Jonathan purchased 84 acres nearby.Jonathan's wife was named Jemima and Lewis' wife was named as Rebecca in deed records.
They possibly came from Franklin Co. North Carolina where researchers list a Lewis Pinion married to Rebecca Myrick d/o Francis & Mary (Turner) Myrick in Franklin Co. North Carolina (not confirmed).John Pinnell and Francis Myrick appear together in court and deed records there.Plus in 1777, there is a Lewis Pinnell & Joshua Pinnell mentioned in an estate sale. What is intriguing about this is that Francis & Mary named a son Turner and there was a Turner Pinnell in the census with Jonathan in 1810 who is thought by some researchers to be his son but who is likely Lewis' son as deed records indicated that by 1805 Lewis was living in Greenville District, South Carolina.Lewis is presumed deceased by 1810 as he doesn't show up in census records but Turner Pinnell and J. Pinion are listed.Jonathan leaves Greenville District and by 1818 is found in Jackson Co. Georgia while Turner remains behind.
I am inclined to believe from the information currently available that Jonathan's father was the John Pinnell listed in the 1790 census in Franklin Co. North Carolina which prior to 1779 was Bute Co. North Carolina and prior to 1764 was Granville.Early Granville county tax records indicate that John was the son of Richard Pinion. There were several Pinnell’s listed in early records there but it appears all but John had left the county by 1771.Note that both Jonathan and Peter had sons named Richard.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who could help confirm or deny this relationship. Also, would be glad to share my current notes with anyone who is researching this family.
