This post intrigued me as I am a Surber researcher, so I did a little work with the census today to see what I could find.
1880 West Virginia

Children:
James E.13(all b. West Virginia)
Mary A.11

1900 West Virginia
Pinnell, Vermont b. Jan 1847, West Virginia, age 53, single, (no children listed as born to this mother), Occ. Farmer, living in Anthony Creek District, Greenbriar County.
Children:(all b. West Virginia)

There is no indication who the fathers are of these children. They are all listed as sons and daughters of Vermont Pinnell who is listed as single. All names are listed as Pinnell.
Hope you find helpful.
