John's father Isaac Pitchlynn is listed as a Military officer in the South Carolina Rangers. He was Leut. Isaac Pitchlynn from Berkeley County, South Carolina. He also owned land in Berkeley and Cravens County, South Carolina. Accordint to Mr George Gaines, John Pitchlynn often related that he was from South Carolina.
