Is the James you're looking for the same James Pitner as I listed on the message above in the MD 1870 census? In Baltimore Co., Maryland?

I haven't had a chance to check the MD censuses out yet. (That James is listed in Baltimore Co, and then for township listed as W. Baltimore, so I don't know if I should look in Baltimore City rolls, or Baltimore Co. excluding City rolls.)

I think my Pitners may have a MD connection, as two of them married women whose father was born in Baltimore.

Anyhow... just thought I'd ask.
