John Playford's _English Dancing Master_

In 1651, a London publisher, John Playford, published what was to become a best-seller: _The English Dancing Master_, a collection of country dances with music and directions. _The English Dancing Master_ went into edition after edition, for over 50 years, and over 2,000 dances were recorded. There is presently a revival of "Playford" English country dances throughout and elegant "Playford Balls", featuring the wonderful music and dances of this era, are held throughout both England and the United States. Many of the beautiful "Playford" dance melodies are available on recordings, notably those by Bare Necessities, a Massachusetts-based country dance band.

Recently a webpage about this famous Playford family and their works has been created - check it out at

http://www.cam.ac.uk/societies/round/playford/index.htm

Included is a link to some Playford genealogy.

Also check out the Country Dance and Song Society of America and the English Folk Dance and Song Society for links to local Playford Balls and other related dance activities - modern-day Playfords would be most welcome in the dance community!
