Apologies in advance for the length, but this is a bit complicated:
Looking for more information on Horace PLUE (Allen2, Peter1) who I believe was married abt. 1866 to 1) Eliza McCane (b. abt. 1848, NY; d. June 18, 1885, supposed to be buried Fort Ann), possibly the daughter of Christiana CONGDON.
(If this is the correct Eliza McCANE, she has a sister Susan, b. ~1842 and brothers John, b. ~1841 and James McCANE b. ~1844 (all older). May also have a half brother George STEVES, STEPHES, STEVIS, STEVENS, STEPHENS, who would be younger, born abt. 1855.)
Horace had at least one, and possibly two additional wives. He married Laura (McCABE) about 1886. He married Alma or Elma (McCABE) sometime between his other two marriages, probably about 1870….Perhaps Laura and Alma were sisters? Based on info in the census records and the estimated ages of the wives, it looks like they are different people, if the children are under the correct mothers. Question: Did Eliza and Horace divorce or what happened to her if he was already married to Alma by the 1880 Census?
According to the information found online, including census records, Horace is the son of Allen PLUE and Sabra EARLE. Horace was b. abt. April 1845-47, NY and died 1926.
He had numerous children indicated with different wives as follows:
1) Effie PLUE (b. abt. 1867, NY)
2) Ella PLUE (b. abt. 1869, NY; d. 29 Aug. 1925, VT, possibly Fairhaven)
m. Samuel J. ARMSTRONG (b. abt. 1865, Fairhaven, Rutland Co., VT
a) Florence ARMSTRONG (b. abt. 1889, Fairhaven, VT)
b) Eliza ARMSTRONG (b. abt. 1887, Fairhaven, VT; d. 1890, Fairhaven, VT)
3) Andrew J. PLUE (b. Oct. 1870, NY ;d. Feb. 16, 1871)
1870 Census shows Horace and Eliza with daughters Effie, 3 and Ella, 1.
Alma or Elma McCABE:
1) Minnie (b. abt. 1870-72, NY)
In the 1880 census, Horace is listed in South Bay, Washington Co. with wife Alma age 19, (so est. birth date for her is 1861) and daughters Effie, 13 and Ella, 11. I find Alma’s death listed on familysearch.org as 18 Jun 1885, the same as Eliza McCANE’s, so this needs to be investigated further. Clearly Eliza and Alma are not the same person as their birthdates are years apart.
1) Rose/Rosa B. PLUE (b. abt. Nov. 1889, Fort Ann, Washington Co., NY)
2) Laura Lucinda PLUE (b. abt. July 1892, Fort Ann, NY)
3) Sarah (Satie) M. PLUE (b. abt. Nov. 1893 or 94, Fort Ann, NY)
4) John H. PLUE (b. abt. Mar or May 1895, Fort Ann, NY)
5) Napoleon A. Bonapart (b. 25 Dec. 1896 or 97, Fort Ann , NY; d. 15 Nov. 1965, Schenectady, Schenectady Co., NY; buried 18 Nov. 1965, Galway, Saratoga Co., NY)
1892 New York State Census shows Horace with Laura, age 35 (est. birthday 1857) in Fort Ann and children Minnie, 10, a child Lilli BLANCHARD , 7, Rosa, 3 and a Bartley KING, 72, widow. (It’s not clear to me if he is a member of this household or in a separate household.)
1900 Census shows Horace, 55 (b. Apr. 1845) with wife Laura, 43 (b. Apr. 1857), Fort Ann Township, stating they were married 14 years (est. marriage 1886). She is shown to have had 6 children with 6 living. Children listed in the household are: Rosa, b. Nov. 1889, Lucinda, b. July 1892, Satie (Sarah) b. Nov 1894, John , b. March or May 1895, Bony, b. Dec. 1896. Perhaps Laura’s 6th child is Lillie BLANCHARD who was living with them in 1892?
1905 shows them still in Town of Fort Ann. Horace age 60, Laura L. age 47, Rosie B. age 15, Laura L. (dau), age 12, Sarah M. , age 10, John H. age 9, and Napoleon A. age 7. Also listed is Andrew J PLUE, brother, age 55.
1920 indicated Horace is living in Warren New York (not sure if County or Town), age 73 and states he is Father-in-Law to Head of Household... and he is widowed. I’ve not yet looked at the actual record to see who he is living with.
Horace appears to be a Civil War Veteran from NY. Company I of the 16th Regiment, Heavy Artillery. I have not yet pursued anything on this.
Trying to verify and source this information which was mostly found online.
Would love to communicate with others researching these families. I am particularly interested in the CONGDON connection and the children coming down through Eliza McCANE, but since there seems to have been a lot of marriages across numerous families, I am interested also in looking at the bigger picture.
Thanks for your interest and look forward to brainstormingn together.
