Notes for JOHN H. PLUMLEE:
From Lynne Pittman Selzer: "John and Linda Catherine moved to Texas about
1907. When daughter Nola Plumlee Pittman visited Tennessee in the 1970s,
she met a very old woman at a farm on the Plumlee property. This old woman
told Nola that John had left a wife and three daughters in Tennessee when
he went to Texas that she was one of the daughters. She gave Nola
the impression that John had suddenly run off with a new wife. A close
examination of the census records shows that this might have been a
misunderstanding. On the 1900 Clay CO, TN census, John age 37, is listed
with wife Malinda, age 19 born in KY. They had been married 4 years and
Malinda had borne no children. Living with them were two children listed
as boarders: Bell Strong, born August 1895 and Beatirce Strong, born March
1897. Beatrice was born after John and Malinda married. A neighboring
couple, Barber Strong age 22 and Nellie Strong age 27, had been married 6
years and listed Nellie as having two living children. The children were
not in the home with them. Perhaps Nellie could not care for her own
children for some reason and they were boarding with John and Malinda.
John and his wife continued to live in Tennessee until after their own
fourth child was born. Further evidence that this Malinda is the wife
listed in the 1900 census is found in subsequent census records with the
number of years married and birth location for Linda of Kentucky. John
was a great deal older than her and perhaps she was a second wife."

Carroll County Historical Quarterly
July 1956/ Page 6-8

The following interview of William Plumlee was taken from an earlier newspaper clipping. Th e Editor of CCHS stated that the date of publication and name of the newspaper could not be d etermined.

William Plumlee was born in 1826 in White County Tennessee. March 29, 1832, his father starte d west with his family in an old fashioned wagon drawn by two yoke of oxen and a man drivin g who traveled with them to be with company. Nashville Tennessee was then a noted place on th eir route.

From Nashville they went to Fords ferry on Ohio river, from there to Chester on the Mississi ppi, from there to Fayetteville and from there to War Eagle, four miles northwest of Huntsvil le, which was the point of their destination and where they arrived May 29, 1832. At that tim e North Arkansas was only two countiesWashington and Izard. His father located on a homestea d about six miles northeast of Huntsville on which he erected a log cabin and the following w inter cleared and fenced eight or ten acres of land.

At that time this was all a howling wilderness. The bottom lands on War Eagle, Kings River, W hite River and Osage were covered with cane from ten to fifteen feet high and so thick tha t a man could not pass through it without parting it with his hands. Deer, turkeys, bears, pa nthers, wild cats and wolves were thick. There were some few elk. His father killed 72 deer d uring the summer of 1833 while they were red, killing as many as six in one day and woundin g three more. Mr. Plumlee remembers that he and two brothers used to get wearied stretching t he hides.

The schools of that day were very primitive. Some years after the Plumlees came here an ol d man arrived in the neighborhood from Virginia and proposed to teach a three months school . The neighbors made up a subscription school for him. We will let Mr. Plumlee describe his s chool days and subsequent life in his own words.

The neighbors met and selected a place in the woods near a spring and cut logs and built a l og cabin, covered it and cut out a door. They made seats by splitting poles and boring hole s in the rounding side in which was placed pins for legs and the ground was swept clean and u sed for a floor. The books we had to use were Websters Blue Back Speller, and Pikes of Smile ys Arithmetic, with an occasional first or second reader.

On Friday after noon our teacher used to teach manners as he called it. He had the boys t o select a partner from among the girls until they were all matched two and two except two wh o stayed in the school house while the others marched 100 yards and back. On their return the y were met at the door by the couple that stayed, and made acquainted with each other. The te acher then had the classes to spell and then took his hymnal and sang a hymn and then dismiss ed school. This was his rule every Friday and was the style of schools in that early day in A rkansas.

My father remained on War Eagle in what is now Madison county until April 7, 1837, when he mo ved to Berryville. He lived at Berryville for twelve years. There were no officers in Prairi e township Carroll county, so they held an election at which 19 votes were cast: My father wa s elected one of the Justices of the Peace and uncle Billie Wood was elected Constable. In th e fall of 1837 we had a three months term of public school taught here by Mr. Butler in a lit tle log house near where John Holman now lives. If there was a church house in all the territ ory embraced in Carroll county I did not know of it. In 1838 a man named Whitely came fro m n ear Huntsville and organized the Old Union church at my fathers house. The following ar e the names of the members who when into this first church organization: Uncle Ap Thomas, Unc le Billie Wood, Uncle Jno. Stanlee, Uncle Isaac Bowen, Aunt Jennie Davis and my mother. Charl ey Whitely was moderator. The meetings were held at my fathers house until a log meeting hou se was built near where Billie Johnson lives. That building was burned and the members buil t another house near the Bradley Bunch farm.

Here is how I spent the winter of 1836. My job was to keep meal while my father and two olde r brothers cut and split rails.

Mills were scarce the. There was a water mill five miles this side of Huntsville and one dow n in Missouri below the mouth of James fork of White river. So keeping up the family supply o f meal and going such distance across creeks and rivers with an ox team in the winter time wa s no easy job. So my father sawed a block about 20 inches in diameter and about 3 feet long a nd burned a hole in one end and set the end that had the hole up. He then cut a pole 10 or 1 2 feet long and cut two forks five or six feet long. He raised the pole and set his forks an d the other end was on the ground and it was fastened and was five or six feet long with a ho le mortised in one end of it to hang to the pole and about a foot from the other end a hole t o put a pin to hold too. Well, the machine is now ready. Here we go, che-whick-che-bum. Tha t was my daily task that winter and we eat pound cake every day.

There was some amusements as well as many drawbacks in a new country to interfere with busine ss. The only way we had to save wheat was to cut it with a reap hook. We had the advantage o f plenty of range for stock, but we had the wild cat, panther, bear and wolf to contend with . The wolf did us more damage than any of the other wild animals. I remember they killed 19 p igs and shoats in one night for my father and they were constantly killing the sheep. The wil d cat, panther and bear did their full part of slaughter of stock in the early days of Carrol l county.

There were many bee trees rich in honey in those days. They were every rich and I have seen m en dig out troughs to put the strained honey in on account of the scarcity of vessels. I reme mber one time some hunters came to my fathers with two cases of honey. One was a case put u p in a dressed deerskin and the other was with the hair on the outside. This looked quite fun ny to a boy like me.

I grew to manhood at Berryville or more correctly where Berryville now is. I married Mary Sta ndlee Nov. 20, 1845. In the year 1846 I improved the place Dr. Wood now lives on and lived th ere until 1849. I sold my improvements to B. H. Berry and moved to Stone county, MO. I sold m y improvements to my father in 1852 and moved to the Butler barrens where Blue Eye, MO., is n ow located and lived there until 1859, when I bought the farm where I now live, of John C. Er nest.

In 1856 I professed a hope in Christ. In 1857 I joined the church at old Union. My wife wa s a member of that church when we were married. I was church clerk when the rebellion broke o ut.

I was a reader of the Globe Democrat then and there was a great cry throughout the county tha t Lincoln was going to free our Negroes. I read his inaugural address and he said he had no p lans to interfere with slavery where it was, nor had he nay inclination to, but he was oppose d to any extension of it into the territories.

In 1861 South Carolina seceded. This was my mothers birthplace. I studied seriously about th e union, if our country was divided against itself how long could it stand. A house divided a gainst itself cannot stand says the scriptures. I meditated seriously and finally took the si de of the union for the sake of my children and for the perpetuity of our government. It seem s that time has justified my course for we now have one of the most powerful governments in t he known world. God save our nation from such blood shed hence froth and forever.

After the war was over I came home and found the churches all broken up. There was a remnan t of Pleasant Hill church came back and they reorganized and I went into the reorganization a nd am a member there yet and have been one of the deacons for a number of years.

I have give you a short history of my early life up to the present. I could have given many i nteresting occurrences, but have left them out owing to lack of time and space. I am raisin g a small crop of corn and oats this year and they require nearly all my time.

Yours Truly,
Williams Plumlee

Notes for SR CLAUDE LEE PLUMLEE:
I remember attending Claude Lee Plumlee's funeral as a young teenager. (It was early in th e life of the NEW First Baptist Church building, the first time I had been there since they h ad changed locations.) His funeral was well attended, and had black and white people in atte ndance. One elderly black man patted Grandpa Plumlee on the shoulder as he went past the cas ket.

Mema (Iska Plumlee) told me that man was the son of a black servant who had accompanied the f amily from TN back 80 years earlier, and that he and Grandpa had been lifelong friends.
