Profession of Monroe Plumlee (1858-1923)?

I am trying to get some facts to support a story my grandmother Alvye Plumlee told my father about her father Randolph Plumlee...

Does anyone have any information on whether Monroe Plumlee (son of William Plumlee and Luvona Kendall; born 1858 in Tennessee, died 1923 in Oklahoma) ever worked as a doctor? The 1880 Census entry has him as a farmer, but I have seen a reference to a "Dr. Monroe Plumlee" on a message board.
