Capt. JOHN McDOWELL was killed by Onondaga Iroqouis Indians at the Balcony Falls Massacre in Augusta Co, VA in Dec. 1742. He left three children: SAMUEL McDOWELL b 17 Oct. 1735, married MARY McCLUNG, Rev. vet and removed to KY; JAMES McDOWELL, b 1737 Timber Ridge, Augusta Co, VA, died 1771 (Botetourt Co.), married May 1760, Augusta Co. to ELIZABETH CLOYD (dau. of DAVID and MARGARET (CAMPBELL) CLOYD); and MARTHA McDOWELL married GEORGE MOFFETT.

MAGDALENE (WOODS) McDOWELL married BENJAMIN BORDEN, JR. (1709-1753) in 1744, Augusta Co, VA. Died of small pox along with two youngest children, Martha and Elizabeth. Only surviving child of Benjamin Borden, Jr. was MARTHA BORDEN (1746-1823)who married BENJAMIN HAWKINS (b. abt 1735-40, d. 1779, Botetourt Co, VA) m2) ROBERT HARVEY (1756-1831) 9 Dec. 1779, Boteoturt Co.

MAGDALELNE (WOODS) McDOWELL BORDEN then married JOHN BOWYER on 4 Feb 1754, Augusta Co.VA at age 38. I know of no children of this couple although she was still a young woman. Gen. John Bowyer was a Botetourt Justice and a man of wealth and influence in Botetourt Co.
