Autosomal DNA Testing
Posted by: Jeff Marquardt (ID *****3267) Date: November 05, 2010 at 11:21:22

Have any known descendants of Pocahontas had autosomal tests done, such as are available through 23andme, Decodeme, FTDNA Family Finder, etc?

My mother's family has a legend of descent from Pocahontas which was once delineated in a now-lost family bible. The family in question were the Randolphs of Virginia, possibly through Governor Beverley Randolph.

My mother (born 1938) was tested by 23andme, and her results were included in a recent study (Dodecad project) that found her to be .5% "Northeast Asian". This seems high to me for the Pocahontas connection, looking more like a Native-American living about 4 generations later. There were marriages between cousins in the Randolph line, as well as older parents, but this would still seem to fall a little short of an ancestor in the early 1600s.

Has anyone else been tested, and if so, what were the percentages (if any) of Asian admixture found?

My mother's Asian element is apparently too small for 23andme's current system to detect.
