Mike, I don't know if it qualifies as a controversy, but my research turns up no one named Penelope as a child of John Bolling and Mary Kennon Bolling.
This is quoted from the Memoir of the Bolling Family, written by Robert Bolling of Chellowe (1738-1775), grandson of John Bolling and my wife's gggggrandfather:
"He [John Bolling] married Mary, daughter of Richard Kennon of Conjuror's Neck, by whom he had one son, John Bolling, born 20 Jan'y, 1700, and five daughters:
Jane born in 1703; married to Richard Randolph.
Mary, in 1711; married to John Fleming.
Elizabeth, born in 1709; married to Dr. William Gay.
Martha, born in 1713; married to Mr. Thomas Eldridge.
Anne, born in 1718; married to Mr. James Murray."
I wish I could give you a lead on Penelope Bolling, but whatever Bolling line she's from is one I've not personally researched. You might check postings about Penelope in the Bolling family forum for clues. Best, Fred
