Hi, Ilya: Your message regarding your Podolsky family was posted osme time ago, but I have only just come across it now (3/01). My maternal grandmother's family was Podolsky, from Kanyev, Russia... also of Kiev and later of Smela, Russia (near Cherkasser). The family was and is Jewish. Some family members in the United States have shortened the name to 'Podell' over the years. My Podolsky family settled in New York, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We know that one of my great-grandmother's brothers, Moise Podolsky, remained behind in Russia at the turn of the last century when most family members left.
