Looking for information regarding my grandfather
Benedikt Podraza (1896 Poland - 1970 Greeley, Nebraska)
Family story: Grandpa Bennie came from Poland. He lived in Chicago for a few years with relatives who owned a tailor shop. His job was to do the ironing. After saving some money, he went west on a train. When Grandpa Bennie got to Cheyenne WY he hated it - turned around got on a train heading back east. He got off in Greeley County (probably the now de-funct town of O'Connor) Nebraska. There, he met and married my grandmother, Madeleine Smyth. That's all anyone seems to know. He was Catholic his whole life in Nebraska. Some of my cousins speculate that he was Jewish. Religious affiliation maybe helpful in terms of family history research. Grandpa Bennie's daughter, my mother is still alive. Growing up she never had contact w/ the Chicago relatives who supported Benedikt as a new immegrant.
Research I've Found:
1. From Ellis Island records: emigrated to US via Eliis Island 1913, 17 years old. Ship: Kleist Port of Departure: Bremen. Last residence Lenki, Galizia (according to Ellis Island records) The ship's maifest shows Benedikt's final destination as his brother Jan Podraza 1418 Cornelia, Chicago IL.
2. 1930 Census: Bernard J. Podraza & wife Madeleine (my grandparents) are listed in Greeley, NE
3. 1920 Census: Bennie Podraza listed in Greeley, NE born in Austria-Poland
4. 1910 Census: John Podraza & wife Albina living in Cook County, IL (Chicago, 16-Ward)According to the 1910 census John Podraza was b. Austria-Poland. language Polish. Occupation: Presser at a tailor shop. Year of Immigration 1886. 46 years old.
That sure sounds like the relative Grandpa Bennie Podraza would have been living with in Chicago.
From Zlatica Beca *who has written on this post too) I know that there are several places called Lenki. I need to find Benedikt's petition for naturalization next to find out which one "my" Benedikt Podraza came from. In the mean time I found your posts - possibly we're related?
Any help would be appreciated.
