All spellings of the German Pfaffenberger trace back to the founding family that arrived in 1733. The oldest son migrated to Virginia, now W.Virginia before the French and Indian War. Most spell the name Puffenberger or Puffenbarger but others went to Poffenbarger. It might be helpful to you to look at "From German to Antietam, the early history of the Pfaffenberger family, Second edition." You can look at excerpts at by going to Books and Thomas Poffenberger. Good luck. Tom
