These Pogues are VERY confusing!! I am in contact with several different Pogue researchers and don't have answers to your questions.....but I do have the same questions, and more........I have been told Joseph was married to Elizabeth Martin 1st and then Hannah LeMaster was second wife, marriage date of December 31,1810. If you use that date then Zachariah's mother would have to be Hannah LeMaster, though most have Elizabeth Martin or Duncan. However, I don't know what the documentation is for either name or marriage. When I ask about sources, I am usually given the name of another researcher, or family member. There was supposed to be a Bible belonging to Zachariah floating around- but haven't found anyone who has actually seen it. There were several Elizabeth Pogues, both by marriage and birth, so the one in the 1850 census may not be the Elizabeth Martin supposed mother of Zachariah. If not- where is she in 1850?? I also read one researcher that has Elizabeth Martin's name as Martha Elizabeth Martin...so you could be right about the Martha & that would explain the confusion of some having Elizabeth and some thinking Martha.
The sad fact is there are very few records that survived in TN & MO for people to find and verify any vitals on these Pogues. Some records have been found and archived fairly recently for Maury County, but no Pogue records as far as I have heard. Almost all of the info I have for Pogue's I consider as no more than research notes, unless and until I can find documents to back up the events. What most are relying on is stories told in their branch, and as you can see- each branch has a little different version.
I am descended from Zachariah>John Lewis>Jacob Orin. Jacob Orin was my grandfather. I have had so many problems just with the life of Zachariah- I really haven't made it any further back as far as my own personal research. I was told Zachariah left TN for MO in late 1830's and then found he was still there in the 1850 census- then was told he died just after 1850- Lo and behold he was in MO census in 1870! So I learned my lesson about taking all the Pogue info with a grain of salt.
Then we have the issue of Cherokee heritage- Zachariah's 1st wife (Fatima??) has long believed to be Cherokee. No proof has been found of her name or heritage--but surely John Lewis had a mother of some sort!! Zachariah's 2nd?? wife is as much a mystery- the only documented wife is Louisa Flowers and most can't agree if she was the 2nd or 3rd wife. I am stuck on that issue and haven't tried to go further.........Good Luck and I hope someone will post documentation.
