I am searching for a phantom…I can find nothing that shows he ever lived, but I DO have his 29 June 1905 wedding photo to my grandmother Ida Marie Cloutier in Brunswick, Maine, so I KNOW he existed at one time. His name was either SAMUEL MAXIME POITRAS or MAXIME SAMUEL POITRAS (or maybe just plain SAMUEL POITRAS?) He was born 3 Mar 1882, probably in Quebec. His mother was Rose Delina (or Delima) Lavallee. She married XAVIER POITRAS (b: 1858 in Canada). Samuel’s mother, Delina, was born in Canada. She also died there and was buried in Roxton Falls, 1942… but whether she lived in Maine during part of her life, I don’t know, but that's where her son Samuel lived at age 17 or 18 when he met my grandmother. He married her when he was 23. Therefore, I don’t know if Samuel was born in Quebec or in Maine. I can find no record of him in either place. It’s like he was a figment of our imagination -- however, he managed to father two children: Samuel Peter Poitras b: 1906 and Cecile Marie Poitras, born in April 1907, shortly after he’d died.
I know, for instance, that his COUSIN Joseph Aime’ Lavallee was born in Brunswick, Maine, 5 Nov 1889, son of Leopold (or Leo Paul) Lavallee and Helen Fournier Gilineau…so I guessed maybe there was a chance that SAMUEL POITRAS had been born in Maine, too? Can find no records, though. SAMUEL POITRAS and Ida Cloutier had a son named Samuel Peter Poitras, born 1906 in Brunswick, Maine. Whenever you look up Samuel Poitras in Maine, this is the Samuel you usually get.)
A few years after SAMUEL MAXIME POITRAS had died in 1907 (age 24) from severe burns received in a boiler explosion in the paper mill in Pejepscot, Penobscot County, Maine, his cousin Joseph Aime’ Lavallee courted my widowed grandmother. They were married on 13 Aug 1912 in Brunswick, Maine. (I have not yet been able to make the “cousin connection” between SAMUEL POITRAS and Joseph Aime’ Lavallee, but that's a mystery for another time.)
ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED to find a thread of the lost POITRAS trail... Thank you.
