Alright Wendy, are you ready for more? I'm going to take you through a website that's all in Polish (take good notes, then you can impress your family and friends later). This will tell you how many people living in Poland use a particular surname, according their national census of 1990.

Go to http://www.herby.com.pl/herby/ and look for the bold phrase "slownika nazwisk wspolczesnie w polsce uszywanych" and click on it. Up comes a new screen. In the white box, type your surname "Pilichowski" and click on "szukaj" (Polish for "search"). The resulting screen tells you that there were 1201 people in Poland using the Pilichowski surname. Out of a population of approx. 39 million, that makes it a fairly rare name (always a good sign, for a genealogist). The collection of letters and numbers is a code telling where those people are located. If you hunt through it, you'll see "Pl" where the "L" has a slash through it, with the number 48 next to it, which tells you that 48 of those 1201 people live in the current wojewodztwo (province) of Plock. If you're still with me, click on "tutaj znajduja sie objasnienia skrotow" and up comes an explanation of what all the other abbreviations mean. At the top of this box, click on "zobacz mape" ("show me the map!") and you'll get a map of where each of those 48 provinces are. It will give you a sense of where in the country people with the Pilichowski name are clustered.

Enjoy,
Sue
