Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann was born March 14, 1825 at Landsberg an der Warthe, Prussia. Landsberg was located on the Warthe (Warta) River some 150 miles east of Berlin. It was a part of the Kingdom of Prussia, but is in modern times an area in Poland. Boundaries and town names changed over the years due to wars and other changes. The old location of the town of Landsberg is now (yr. 2004) Gorzow Weilkopolski, Poland. Gustav's Prussian family has yet to be discovered, but he apparently migrated at an early age to the area of Berlin. He was married to Adelfine Louise Friederike Sperling. They were parents of two sons-- Paul, born in 1852 in Berlin, and Max, born in 1854, perhaps in the same area. Gustav immigrated to the United States, ca. 1854 and settled at Indianola with the two boys. The wife and mother we assume died in Germany, on the voyage to America, or shortly after arrival in Texas (we found her on the application to come to the states with Gustave - Brandenberg Immigration List, but have found no proof she arrived in the states with him, nor any death records in the states). Gustav was a drayman and watchman for the Morgan Steamship Lines at Indianola. He married a woman named Wilhelmine (mnu), at Indianola in September, 1856. Gustav declared his intent for U.S. citizenship September 1, 1859 at Indianola. He was a member of Indianola's volunteer fire department. Gustav and Wilhelmina were blessed with a daughter, Augusta in 1862. Most towns in Texas had a militia, or home guard, and Indianola was no exception. When the Civil War began Gustav enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Indianola October 5, 1861 for a period of the War. His military record shows he was 38 years of age, stood 5 foot-10 inches, had blue eyes and brown hair and was of a light complexion. he was a private in Company B, 8th regiment of the Texas Infantry, CSA. He served as a musician and a rifleman. The 8th regiment was involved in several skirmishes in Texas and bordering states during the War. Indianola was captured by the Union Army in one of the few battles of the War that took place on Texas soil. The port was a strategic point in the gulf of Mexico from where the Union forces could control shipping activities. Gustav was captured at Indianola May 4, 1864 and was sent to a detention facility at New Orleans, La. He was transferred to a detention facility at Shreveport, La., July 22, 1864 and exchanged at Red River Landing with prisioners held by Confederate forces. He was 41 years of age when he returned to his family at Indianola. Life returned to normal until a hurricane destroyed Indianola in 1875. Over 400 people lost their lives, but the Lehmann family somehow survived. The homes and businesses were rebuilt, but in 1886 another hurricane swept through Indianola, again totally destroying the town. It is believed that the Lehmann daughter, Augusta, perished in the 1886 storm because she was never heard from again. Gustav and Wilhelmine relocated to Cuero, joining the Paul Lehmann family who had moved there prior to 1880. Carl Ludwig Gustav Lehmann died May 17, 1892 at Cuero. He is buried at Hillside Cemetery. A marble tombstone marks the grave with inscriptions etched in German language. The tombstone identifies his birthplace. A notice in the Victoria Advocate May 21, 1892 contained this information: " Mr. Gustav Lehmann who was buried yesterday was an old citizen and an excellent man . Many years ago he was a watchman for the Morgan Line at Indianola where he was held in the highest esteem." His 2nd wife (Wilhemine, born in Germany-maiden name unknown) is buried next to him. Wilhelmine Lehmann genealogy is yet to be discovered (yr. 2006). She was second wife of Gustav Lehmann. Her birthplace was Hamburg, Germany, but she immigrated to the United States and Texas, living first at Yorktown, a German settlement in DeWitt County, Texas. She and Gustav were married in September, 1856 at Indianola. They were parents of a daughter, Augusta, who was born in 1862. They were members of the Lutheran church. Gustav and Wilhelmine moved to Cuero from Indianola in 1886, following the last hurricane that destroyed Indianola. Wilhelmine died January 19, 1901. She is buried in Hillside Cemetery at Cuero. A marble tombstone marking the grave of Gustav and Wilhelmine identifies her birthplace a Hamburg, Germany. Her obituary appeared in the Cuero Record with the following notations: "Mrs. Wilhelmine Lehmann, stepmother of Paul and Max Lehmann, died in this city yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the advanced age of 77 years and will be buried this afternoon at 3 o'clock from the residence of her son, Paul. All friends and acquaintances are invited to attend the funeral. Mrs. Lehmann had lived in Texas nearly a half-century, at first in Yorktown, then in Indianola until the 1875 storm, and since in Cuero. She leaves a long list of friends to mourn her death."
