Jamie,

I think your research will have to begin in English. If your grandfather was a prisoner of war in England, there has to be a place somewhere that holds those records. They should be able to give you his exact date of birth and place of birth. Although you and your family may understand that he said he was born in Krakow, this may not necessarily been the case. Many times people would give the closest large city if they were born in a tiny village, whose name would be unknown to most people.

Krakow would have been the capital of the province of Krakowskie. He could have been born in the powiat (county) of Krakowski.

Before you can try to find any records on him in Poland, you will need to know the exact place and date he was born. Once you have that, the members of the mail list can help you determine where you will be able to find records to do your research for a family tree.
