Hi Charles,
I reviewed some of the U.S. genealogy documents for Dominick (Krakauskas) Krakowski and came to the following conclusion.
In most of the U.S. records, with the exception of his 1910 U.S. census, Dominick classifies his ethnicity as Lithuanian. In the 1910 census, he is classified as Russia/Polish.
I believe that “Punskas” Poland should be PUNSK Poland. It appears that “Punskas” is the Lithuanian name for PUNSK.
The village of Pun~sk (with a Polish diacritical mark above the “n”) is located on the Polish border with Lithuania.Punsk has a population of 1,112 and is located in the Polish powiat (county) of Sejny and province of Podlaskie.
There are still families with the Liszkowski (9) and Krakowski (72) surnames living in the county of Sejny.Liszkowski is a rare surname in Poland today with only 261 adults with that surname.Krakowski is a more common Polish surname with 3,183 adults with that surname in Poland today.
It seems that Anna Liszkowski was the widow of Samuel Liszkowski.
In 1910, Dominick was living with the John and Mary Liszkowski Family at 6612 Hosmer Ave. in Cleveland OH 44105.John may have been Dominick’s step brother.
In 1920, the Dominick and Agatha Krakuaskas Family lived at 3790 East 52nd Street (rear) in Cleveland OH 44105.
In 1930, the Dominick and Agnes Krakauskas family lived at 6705 Linwood Ave. in Cleveland OH 44103.
Dominick Krakauskas (Krakowski) was born on November 30, 1885 (or 1886) in “Punskas” Lithuania (died on August 2, 1964 in Cleveland OH).He married Agatha/Agnes Jankauskas (Jankowski) around 1913, Presumably in Cleveland, OH.Agatha/Agnes Jankauskas (Jankowski) was born around 1889 in Lithuania (died on August 27, 1960 in Cleveland OH).Dominick and Agatha had four (4) children:Agnes born in 1914 in Pennsylvania, Alphonse V. born on in May 26, 1917 in Ohio, Constant born on October 3, 1919 in Ohio and Robert V. born on September 16, 1922 in Ohio.
Dominick Krakauskas arrived at Ellis Island on September 24, 1906 on board the S.S. Finland. His destination was New Britain CT where he was going to join his brother Janos Krakauskas. He listed his last residence as “Suwalk” Russia and his ethnicity as Lithuanian. There is annotation on the ship manifest, that Dominick completed his U.S. Naturalization process in the Cleveland U.S. District.
There is an Ellis Island arrival record for an Agota Krakauskas (her second). She arrived in New York on September 2, 1929 on board the S.S. Leviathan. Her destination was 6703 Linwood Street in Cleveland where she was going to join her husband Dominikas. She listed her brother Juczas Jankauskas in Burokai Lithuania as her nearest living relative in her native land.Burokai Lithuania is directly across the border from Buraki Poland. Both are “postage sized” villages.Burokai and Buraki (population 45) are about 6 kilometers east of Punsk, Poland.
I am not related
Good Luck in your search,
Norbert
