Hi,
I see our forum best friend Norbert gave you almost all about from the US databases, here is the help from Poland:
FAMILY NAME
According to Polish etymological works the family name KOCANDA (but given also as KOCAN~DA / KOCAÑDA - Polish grammar n with diacritical mark over the letter) originated from Polish word and very old name "Kaczan", noted in Poland from the year 1265.
This is very rare family name in Poland, the surname location map tells the family name cradle could be located in the southern part of Poland.
FAMILY ORIGIN
The village of ZALUCZNE (ZAL~UCZNE) is located in the same southern part of Poland. Historical sources are telling that this ZALUCZNE was settled by Polish Highlanders in the years 1596 - 1604 by the citizens of nearly located villages Odrawaz, Czarny Dunajec, and Czech's province Orawa. First local census made by local parish parson in the year 1608 noted the families living in this ZALUCZNE in the beg of the 17th century (w/o Polish diacritical marks): Biela, Koczanda (Kocanda), Swietek, Harbut, Popolka, Wesyk, Ciesla, Woytaszek (Wojtaszek), Stecz, Niedzwiedz, and Swientek.
FAMILIES STILL LIVING IN THIS PRESENT-DAY ZALUCZNE
From Polish censues 1990/2002, and Polish white pages we see that families KOCANDA (as KOCAN~DA) are still living in this Zaluczne:
Anna Kocanda
Edward Kocanda
Jan Kocanda
Jozef Kocanda
Tadeusz Kocanda

Hope this helps in your family invaluable roots search,
Tad
