Hi, I have been researching my Polish/Russian relatives with very little success and would love to see if someone can help.
My great grandfather was Charles Joseph Oszczepiński (shortened to Stepinski once he came to the us). I have his ss5 form which states that his father was Joseph Stepinski and his mother was Stella Romanovich - obviously Americanized. I know Charles was born in March 1881. The ss5 lists his birth place as Warsaw. I have his death certificate and it does not list his parents names or place of birth.
My great grandmother was Alexandra Yeskowicz. I have found nothing verifying her name except "Alex" on a death certificate for a child that died. She went by Alice in the census records. Her grave lists her as Alice "Y" but I only have my father's recollection on the name. She was born about 1893. Her brother was Charles Carey (again obviously an Americanized name).
The census records do not have any consistency on immigration dates for either Charles or Alexandra but they apparently had a child born in New York (from Censuses) and they resided in Lincoln, Maine in 1920 until they died.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go to look for the polish birth record for Charles? I seem to have the most information on him, so I figure that is a good starting point. I do not speak any polish so searching polish websites has proved to be of little help.
Thanks so much!
