Thank you very much for a very full response, I much appreciate the time it must have taken. I too had a problem with my first post to the forum. After that I wrote my respose in a word processor (as I am doing now). When completed I cut and paste the whole lot into the Followup screen. I also find the Pole family interesting, and out of all my various ancestors Thomas Pole MD is my favourite.
I think I might have slightly mis-led you, in that when I said that Edward never went to America, I should have said that he never emigrated to America. He may have visited and returned a few years later, but I have no evidence to support this and from what I know of him, I rather doubt it. If he did, it would have been before he was married. He was active in the Quaker movement in England - locally in Wiveliscombe where he lived and the next small town Milverton, where (on the border between the two places), he gave land for the purpose of building a meeting house for the Quakers. The building has long since gone, as has the house where he lived, but the old graveyard remains.
I would think that Edward was not brought up as a strict Catholic, and perhaps his turning to the early and emerging Society of Friends, was a reaction to the brutalities of the earlier generations. Dr. Thomas Pole clearly wrote that his grandfather (Edward) died in 1712 aged about 42 years, he didn't know the month. I have some evidence, still to be checked and explored further, that he was born five years earlier than 1670.
I am sorry to hear that you are not descended from Marmaduke and Ann Coates after all - especially after all the work you have put into this. However you presumably know the true position and I guess that this is more important. Do you know any more about Ann's date of birth (or age at death) or her marriage? I would love to hear what you have about the Coate(s) family, I have only a little on the website and the only line down from them is Newbold, which needs completing.
Any help on this would be great.
